“Religious Approaches to Disaster and Recovery: Past, Present, Future”

Throughout the history of Japan, participation in religious activities and the aid it offers have long been seen as both an effective means to prevent natural and human-made disasters and a driving force in post-disaster recovery efforts. This aspect of religious traditions has garnered much attention among scholars in recent years. This workshop seeks to better understand the relationship between religion and disasters, not only as a phenomenon of the distant past, but as an aspect of the social role that religion continues to play today. Thinking beyond a simplified logic of “salvation” that focuses exclusively on the relationship between “those who save” and “those who are saved,” this workshop brings attention to the dynamic issues of faith and religious activity as it pertains to communities affected by disasters. Furthermore, by bringing attention to a broader understanding of religious activities concerned with post-disaster restoration including grief-care, spiritual-care, and rescue efforts of damaged religious and cultural property in disaster-stricken areas, this workshop seeks to explore the past, present and prospects of religious approaches to disaster relief and recovery.
